The Area

Hugged by the shores of Lago Nahuel Huapi and the slopes of Cerro Otto, Bariloche is a popular retreat for Argentineans throughout the year. The town offers a wealth of restaurants and nightclubs. Shops sell everything from handicrafts to clothing to the region's famous fine chocolates.

The town's largest attraction - literally - is Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, which surrounds Bariloche. This park encompasses nearly 4,500 square miles, the changes in landscape so dramatic that while summer has hold on the lower altitudes, snow still caps some of the peaks. The park is a hiker's paradise, home to abundant wildlife and an extinct volcano, Cerro Tronador.
